Y'all I really can't believe how fast this year has gone by. The fact that I have been a blogger over a year, kinda makes me super happy because I didn't think I would make it. After Christmas, I had a nervous breakdown. I felt overwhelmed and was about to say goodbye to my dream. It was hard. I felt incredibly alone and didn't want my life to pass by because I was working all the time. Working as a wardrobe stylist I love what I do, so blogging goes hand in hand. It's where I can share practical fashion tips, Also, some of my current favorites; from beauty to lifestyle. This year was filled with lots of lessons and these are my top five.
Celebrate the "tiny" victories. For me, this is incredibly hard. As someone who loves to work hard and see results right away, blogging is a whole nother beast. I promise you ladies you can work hard and spend hours a day building your platforms, and still feel like you got nowhere. Your focus has to be different. It took me almost a year to realize this. To enjoy my small victories and live in the moment. How amazing is that I get to work and collaborate with a few brands that I actually love and purchased myself. I had to step back and see how far I have come.
Comparison is really the thief of joy. This goes hand and hand with the first lesson I shared. It's so easy to get caught up in the lives of other bloggers. They are posting 3 times a day, styling the cutest and most perfect outfits and traveling the world. While you are sitting in your workout clothes at home. I realized one thing for sure is I need to stay in my lane, and work really hard. I know we all are incredibly busy. I have 3 kids that need me to be present and a husband that loves a home cooked meal. It's easy to start comparing myself to girls who have no kids and are able to devote all their time to blogging. That's just not my reality and I'm okay with that. I love my life and grateful my husband supports our family financially, so I can devote my time into our home, part-time to styling and blogging. I don't care if I don't post on Instagram 2-3 times a day because my season of life is mothering. I know we all have different opinions of what a mother should be like. This is my truth and I will love every second of it. Each of us have different responsibilities and priorities. We should respect and encourage one another. Don't compare yourself to a blogger who has been doing this for years and is able to out-source a lot of her work. If you are a one woman show, then own it and simply enjoy your journey and don't compare yourself to the best edited version of someone else.
Kindness and integrity matters. I am honestly saddened how some bloggers think it's okay to be rude to others. I have gotten messages from other bloggers that are hurting because of how another blogger made them feel. Just because you started out a few years before someone else does not give you the right to be prideful or arrogant. I have had one encounter from a fellow Houston mom blogger who was so high-school like that I had to un-follow her. She acts one way on Instagram to her followers and another way to someone on DM. I have also learned that some bloggers will do anything to sell, and simply lie. You're readers and Instagram followers will catch on eventually. I will never promote something I don't love myself for a sponsored post. Sure it's nice to get paid from a company but it's not right! Granted if you are working with a brand that you love what they make, and have an opportunity to get paid to promote them; that's another story. I love that, and completely think it's amazing. One of the many perks of blogging is being able to try out brands that I haven't heard of and being able to review the products for my readers. My point is I believe that my hard work will pay off and I will get more sponsored opportunities from brands I love and use. I have been able to receive free product for review this year, and I'm incredibly grateful. I am learning how to work with brands and the business of blogging. Honestly there is so much more to blogging that I am still not sure about, but each day I learn something new.
Find a community of cheerleaders! Yes blogging can be lonely, no one really talks about the loneliness as much as we should be. When I started blogging a year ago, I didn't know a single beauty or fashion blogger. Today, I know so many beautiful and inspiring bloggers because I was willing to create real relationships with like-minded women. At first I just wanted to meet as much bloggers as possible for community and then I realized that we are all different and I need to nurture relationships with bloggers who have the same values as me. Sure I will chat with everyone online but really fostering relationships and getting to know them on a real personal way I've only done with a few. One of my best ways to meet other bloggers is simply reach out, the worst thing that can happen is they don't reply. Don't give up on relationships with bloggers because of fear or rejection. My passion is community, I hope this year I make more time for meaningful friendships with other bloggers, they understand the crazy yet fun industry...
Blog because you love to, not because you have to. Blogging should be your passion. It's where you have the chance to share with the world your creativity and passions. I have always loved fashion and beauty! It comes natural to me to talk about styling looks, and looking your best. I have the opportunity to style women and lately a few men, helping them look their best. I don't talk about sports or crafts because I don't know anything about that world. It's important to be genuine and only give advice about topics you know about. Don't try to be an expert at everything. Master a few things and share your expertise with the world. It doesn't mean I don't have bad days and want to unplug. It's okay to take a break and refocus.
This year I want to start incorporating more lifestyle topics; such as entertaining, faith, motherhood and travel. I have shared a few more personal things with y'all and I want to continue to do that and more. My blog is focused on fashion and beauty but I don't just want to talk about those two topics because there are so many more parts of life. I want to share our journey in foster care and adoption. How that has changed our entire family in the most beautiful way. I want to write about tips on entertaining and why you should start today. And so much more...
